Product is cooled on arrival to the Pismo Oceano Vegetable Exchange cold storage by means of a hydro-vaccuum tube or a clam-shell icing machine. Depending whether the product is susceptible to water damage, icing may be a preferred cooling method over the hydro-vac tube. Vegetables provided by POVE that respond well to icing may include: broccoli, parsley, italian parsley, kale, cilantro, leeks, red and green chard, and brussel sprouts.
In early 2004, POVE purchased a new clam shell style icing machine, which will distribute ice throughout each box in a manner that is the highest quality. The advancement in technology will allow vegetables to be shipped with the confidence that the product will arrive to the customer in the best possible condition.
Quality is one of the top priorities for POVE and a new icing machine will help achieve an overall better package for the customer.
